SPILL THE BEANS
Review by Andy
Another from ‘The Great British Brewing Co.’ who are the brewers for Aldi, however ‘The Great British Brewing Co.’ don’t actually exist and it seems that it is a made-up company name, for whatever reason known to Aldi themselves, I’m sure.
This one is co-brewed by the Brains brewery, based down in Wales.
Described on the bottle as a deep brown porter with real coffee beans. There is an initial roasted malty chocolate aroma, with notes of caramel, liquorice, raisins and some cocoa. The taste is creamy smooth with notes of chocolate, figs, raisins and sweet malt.
OK, so onto the beer, a very dark appearance as you would expect from a porter, smooth looking with a ever-so slight head to it.
The over riding aroma is the caramel, I can also smell the coffee coming through.
The taste is hints of the coffee/toffee, with the porter taste you’d expect, but without the inky depth you’d associate with a decent porter. Replaced by that is a slightly sweet, coffee-y beer, which was promised from the bottle description.
I’ve found this range from Aldi a bit hit and miss – more hit than miss though, to be fair – and although coffee isn’t my favourite, I can appreciate this is well brewed and a good attempt at doing something a bit more interesting than your standard porters.
For me, this is a little lacking in the depth department, although you can taste the coffee and caramel etc, I’d like a bit more depth to the flavours, I can appreciate they’ve tried to be subtle with it all, but if you’re going to do flavoured beers then go the whole hog and make the flavours shine through, this kind of falls between both stools.
